sarahb“Before becoming pregnant with my first baby, I dabbled in yoga, but was never very serious about it. However, once I found out I was pregnant, I knew staying healthy and active would be vital to enjoying the next 8 months. A friend recommended Roots Prenatal Yoga, and I started going when I was 11 weeks along. When I met Sandi for the first time, she was so warm and welcoming. I immediately liked her and really loved the sacred space she had created for the class. I was unsure how I felt about sharing in front of the other pregnant mamas, but the group was completely non-judgmental and I really enjoyed everyone’s insights on the different topics every week. The yoga itself wasn’t too difficult and it never made me feel awkward, even when I reached 40 weeks. It truly helped me stay loose during my pregnancy and there were many weeks when I couldn’t wait to get there so I could stretch (especially those hips!) and check in on my new mama friends as they progressed in their pregnancies as well. Thinking about it now, I really miss the Family Tree family and look forward to making it a part of my experience next time around. It was a very supporting and relaxing environment. I looked forward to yoga each week as a time where I could focus inward and nurture myself and baby.

It’s warm, personal, and completely unpretentious. I can’t say enough good things about family tree yoga. The space is simple, yet beautiful, and the classes were never overcrowded.

“I just wanted to drop you a quick note to let you know that we had our baby! I ended up having to be induced 🙁 and was in labor for right at 24 hours. I wanted to tell you about how much I enjoyed each and every one of the classes I attended and will be sure to come with each of our additional pregnancies. I kept repeating to myself while in labor “I am a strong woman and I CAN do this!” If you could pass this email on to Melissa that would be great too! My last night there she and I had a short conversation about being induced, which I figured that I was on that track. Melissa really calmed some of my nerves about being induced and what it entailed, when we arrived at the hospital that night I was obviously still freaking because I knew that I was indeed going to be a mama soon and that my whole birth plan had already gone out the window! But I started repeating my mantra, thought about what Melissa and I had talked about, and used the breathing techniques used in class to calm my nerves. When the nurse checked me that night she said that I should be prepared that this may take two days because of how hard and closed my cervix was, I however had other plans and they didn’t include being in labor that long! In the middle of the night I started in with contractions, unfortunately I thought I just couldn’t get comfortable in that awful bed and continued to let my husband sleep through all of it. I started to panic because they wouldn’t let me do any of the things that I wanted to do like walk around or even just move around since I had to stay tethered to that awful monitor! Unfortunately I let my anxiety get the best of me. But I think the best part is that before L was even born I was already talking about having our next child. For the next one though I’m going to have a doula! Your classes gave me something to look forward to each week, kept me going, got me thinking about what kind of mom I’d be, different ways to do things and connected with other mamas! I don’t think there are enough words to express just how much I enjoyed each class! I can’t wait to do some baby and me yoga classes!

image“I took Roots Prenatal Yoga class during my third pregnancy. I had never taken yoga before, but I wanted to do something for myself before the new baby arrived. My instructor Tiffany was so warm and encouraging. She helped my learn the poses, and she taught me ways to calm my mind and body. The weekly yoga classes were a sanity saver. “I can’t even begin to tell you how much the prenatal yoga classes have meant to me. Even though my birth experience was tough, I feel good about how I handled it and I’m not dwelling on the things that didn’t go as planned. “If I could write a story of the perfect birthing experience for me, I had it! I have been promoting your class even more to all my pregnant friends. Here’s my story:

Sometimes I wondered if I was getting anything out of the class because a workout to me is the sweaty, make you really tired kind. I made sure to go to your class because it was the one way for me to focus on the baby growing in me and to slow my life down. I never realized how much the mental part of your class would ever help me.

I started labor at 6:30 on a Thursday night. I went downstairs in my basement, lit a couple of candles and wrote in my pregnancy journal. I also reviewed the breathing techniques from the hospital book I got a couple years ago. I loved the silence. My contractions stayed about 3 minutes apart for 3 hours. I called the midwife and asked if I could stay home since the contractions didn’t hurt. My husband and I laid in bed while we slept until 11:30. (He slept, I rested) I started getting shakes real bad and the contractions were hurting more so we checked in at 12 am.

I was able to get in the whirlpool. I remember reading the article you gave us about how the pain in labor really isn’t that long even though you are in “in labor” for a while. That article really motivated me as I was having contractions. I was at peace the whole time and that was because of what I learned in your Yoga class.

‘After the whirlpool, I got back on the exercise ball. Labor moved fast just like it did the first time around. I warned them how fast it went once I got serious contractions so the nurse and midwife had everything ready. My midwife, Sea from Methodist Midwives, was with me the whole time. Sea, my nurse, and my husband were awesome! They kept telling me how great I was doing. Labor moved fast. Sea broke my water when I was at 8 cm and about 20 minutes and two pushes later, Avery arrived.

I was on cloud nine because of my mental-being during labor. I didn’t realize until after Avery was born that your class kept my brain right where it needed to be. I have been meaning to get this email out to you to share my joy. It feels so great to write this email after five weeks so I can relive the whole experience again. I loved being pregnant (both times) and after this delivery, I’m ready to go again.

“I just wanted to shoot you a note to say, I had my baby, V.H. on the 9th. He weighed 6lbs 11 oz and was 19 and 1/4 inches long. We’re so in love:-) I wanted to thank you, Sandi, because I feel that my yoga helped me get though a long and tough labor without drugs. It was the most difficult physical/athletic feat I’ve ever accomplished! Giving birth was harder than any mountain I have climbed or triathlon or race I’ve ever done. Yoga definitely helped me breathe through each contraction and take them one at a time. “I wanted to let you know that, even though my labor didn’t go exactly as planned, yoga really did help me in a lot of ways. For most of the labor, I was able to focus through the contraction, and when I was losing control because I progressed so quickly, I was able to make the decision to have the epidural knowing it was to get back in control of the situation. The water breaking early (before active labor, at home), meant things were a little rushed at pushing, but the focus and mindfulness helped me get through that most difficult period. Also, we were able to really take control of our own post-labor experience and stay calm and confident in ourselves at the hospital and at home. I guess I am saying thank you SO much for your guidance. I don’t know if I would be as satisfied with my experience as I am had I not been at Roots Prenatal Yoga.
